Induction to the MSI

The graduate contact person for Mathematical Sciences, Dr Ben Andrews, should be the first person you see on arrival. He is available for consultation on just about anything concerning graduate studies in the MSI. At the outset he will aquaint you with the MSI procedures and ensure that you meet the Senior IT Officer, Mr Nick Guoth, who will organize your MSI computer account. He will then pass you to the Program coordinator/s relevant to your interests.

The coordinator/s will indicate potential supervisors and their specific expertise, and discuss relevant institute activities such as seminar series and courses on offer. Although there are no formal requirements regarding coursework, most students attend some of the advanced level courses that are given from time to time.

You are encouraged to widely canvas all options prior to any decision being taken as regards determination of supervisor and panel. The panel has at least three members including the supervisor, and there is the possibility of joint supervision with other Research Institutes. Your supervisor has the main responsibility for overseeing your research work, and will meet with you regularly. The full advisory panel is there as relevant experts from whom you may seek advice about your work. You will also meet with them formally at your mid-term review.

From time to time the Graduate Board of Studies will organize workshops and seminars on topics suggested by the graduate students of the MSI.
