Research Report SRR95-010
On The Concentration Of Hydroxyindoleacetic Acid In Schizophrenics A
Meta Analysis
Henry C. Tuckwell
Abstract:
A meta-analysis was performed on the results of several investigations of the
concentration of the serotonin metabilite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA)
in the cerebrospinal fluid or serum of acute and chronic schizophrenic patients.
Using Fisher's procedure and a weighted Lipták method, no significant
differences
were found between normal controls and schizophrenics, indicating that
disturbances
of serotoninergic systems do not, in general or essentially, contribute to the
etiology of schizophrenia.
