Research Report MRR00-007
A still unsettled question
M.F. Newman
Abstract:
Burnside's paper ``On an unsettled question in the
theory of discontinuous groups" of 1902 has proved to be
outstandingly influential in the development of a theory of groups
described by presentations because of the questions about groups
that were asked in it. These notes try to give a guide to some of
the paper's influence and to some current interesting and
challenging questions arising from the questions in the paper.
