Advanced Computation and Modelling Program

Here are the current members staff and students of the program, together with a short description of their research interests.

Staff Members

  • Dr Markus Hegland works on data mining, fast Fourier transforms, ill-posed problems, in particular numerical differentiation and the solution of banded linear systems of equations
  • Prof Richard Brent works in Computational number theory; Computational complexity and analysis of algorithms; Computer architecture and novel models of computing; Numerical analysis and numerical algorithms; Random number generators; Software and the WWW.
  • Dr Steve Roberts works on Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations: In particular Data Mining, Predictive Modelling, Thin Plate Splines; Geophysical Problems; Robust Fluid Flow Calculations.
  • Dr Linda Stals works on Cache optimisations of iterative methods, Parallel implementation of multigrid methods, Adaptive refinement of unstructured finite element grids and Object orientated programming.
  • Dr Jochen Garcke works on Sparse grids (Classification, Regression, Semi-supervised learning) Density Estimation; Highdimensional Partial Differential Equations; Eigenvalue Problems / Schrödinger Equation; Diffusion Approximation of Queueing Networks / Fokker-Planck-equation
  • Dr Matthew Hardy works on computational fluid dynamics, and parallel domain decomposition methods.

Long Time Visiting Fellows

  • Prof Mike Osborne works on Numerical linear algebra, and eigenvalue problems; Solution of boundary value problems in ODE's; Estimation and approximation; Polyhedral convex functions; Discrete simulation
  • Dr Belinda Barnes is a visiting fellow who works on nonlinear dynamics and investigates aspects of both the analytical and numerical analysis of such systems.
  • Dr Chris Zoppou (GeoSciences Australia) is a visiting fellow who works on the solution of shallow water wave equations.
  • Dr Ole Nielsen (GeoSciences Australia) works on Parallel Data mining Algorithms

Students

  • Shev MacNamara works with Markus Hegland on master equation formulation of gene switching.
  • Kurt Putniks works with Steve Roberts on the solution of gas dynamics.
