Invariant theory and a curious problem in quantum information

We investigate the algebra of invariants associated with the mixed quantum 2 qubit state. The curious structure so revealed is not of the Cohen-Macaulay form, seemingly at odds with a result in the literature. This talk includes a brief introduction to invariant theory.

This is joint work with Ron King (Southampton) and Peter Jarvis (Tasmania).
