Factorisation of formation residuals in finite groups

It is easily shown, if not well known, that in a direct product of finite groups, the nilpotent residual of a subnormal subgroup decomposes as the direct product of its projections. In this talk we give a generalisation of this result for more general normal products, and attempt to characterise all formations whose residuals enjoy an analogous property.
