The Australian Research Council (ARC), established in 1988, supports Higher Education Research in Australia. It is a major source of funding for University research across all disciplines and the principal source for the mathematical sciences. Until March 2000 the ARC was part of the from the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) but it is now an independent body. A great deal of information about the purpose and structure of the ARC, its programs and objectives can be found on its website. Unfortunately it is difficult to isolate information which is relevant to a particular discipline. The aim of this site is to summarize information pertinent to the mathematical sciences. Direct funding for the mathematical sciences is almost exclusively through two programs: Information about these programs and their procedures insofar mathematics and statistics is concerned can be found by following the links. Indirect funding occurs through the ARC Small Grant Scheme which is a administered by individual institutions with funds provided by the ARC according to a formula based on their success in the Large Grant Scheme.
