The ARC Research Fellowships Scheme is application-based. Approximately 100 new full-time Fellowships are awarded each year for research at postdoctoral level and above. Awards can be made in four categories: Australian Postdoctoral Fellowships; Australian Research Fellowships; Queen Elizabeth II Fellowships; and Senior Research Fellowships. Awards are made through a competitive selection process with excellence, as determined by peer review, the primary criterion. The Scheme aims to foster opportunities for pursuing internationally competitive independent research, targeting those who have demonstrated a clear commitment to high-quality research.
Tenured and non-tenured researchers may apply.
Each successful applicant holding a
tenured position must, however, resign from that position
before taking up the Fellowship.
This requirement applies to all categories.
All Fellowships are open to international competition but overseas candidates generally need to demonstrate a higher level of performance than their competitors or be able to offer special expertise, extensive skills or exceptionally high performance levels not available locally, of benefit to Australian research. Assessment of Fellowship applications is the responsibility of the Research Training and Careers Committee (RTCC) of the ARC. The RTCC undertakes the overall assessment of all applications against the eligibility and selection criteria. The RTCC is assisted by four Discipline Panels, which are divided into nine subpanels:
The RTCC is a thirteen member committee composed of a chairperson and the twelve members of the nine subpanels The current membership of all the ARC panels can be found by consulting the ARC members page of the ARC website.
