2005 Special Year on Computational Mathematics

Symposium on Optimisation and Data Analysis

In honour of Professor Mike Osborne's 70th birthday

21 – 23 September 2005

Australian National University, Canberra

The symposium included a celebration of Professor Mike Osborne's 70th birthday and was thus aligned with Mike's interests over the years. Mike pioneered multiple shooting for the solution of boundary value problems and also made fundamental contributions in the areas of nonlinear optimisation, parallel numerical linear algebra and inverse problems, particularly the estimation of coefficients in ordinary differential equations. Mike is one of the key figures in the development of numerical methods in Australia during the second half of last century and the international impact of his work continues to this day.

The scope of the symposium included optimisation, the application of numerical techniques in statistics, numerical linear algebra and inverse problems. The symposium ran as three separate days, each covering a subject area in which Mike has worked, and each featuring three keynote speakers of international renown, as well as many distinguished national and international researchers.
