Modelling and Applied Probability have long been associated with ANU Statistics and (now) Centre for Mathematics and its Applications, not least in its earlier and more recent stages due to the involvement of Professor Joe Gani. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, this Symposium celebrated both the subject and, more especially, contributions by Joe. His work in establishing, editing, and chairing the Applied Probability Trust has fostered this area of research, and is a singular contribution to a discipline from a man who arrived in what is now his adopted homeland as a refugee in 1948. The invited speakers covered a range of current topics.
