Travel Information

Canberra - Sydney by bus
Murrays Couches and Greyhound Australia both operate regular express coach services between Sydney Central Station, Sydney International Airport and Canberra Jolimont Centre. Early bookings often attract cheap rates. Travelling times between Sydney and Canberra are typically 3 to 3 1/2 hours, provided that one avoids afternoon/evening peak hour travelling out of Sydney. Jolimont Centre is located in the Canberra city centre about 5 minutes walk from the ANU.

Canberra Airport - ANU by bus
The Airliner bus service, operated by Deanes Buslines, transfers passangers between Canberra Airport and the City Bus Interchange (5 minutes walk from the ANU) for $9 per trip. The service runs approximately every 30 minutes on weekdays and every hour on weekends until 6pm.

Customs and transfer at Sydney International Airport
All travellers to Australia, other than Australian and possibly New Zealand citizens, are legally required to hold a valid visa to travel to Australia. You may need a short-stay business visa. Check the Business visa section of the Department of Immigration web site to obtain binding information on visa requirements or contact your nearest Australian Embassy or Consulate. Instead of a visa, participants from certain regions (e.g. US or EU) may be able to get an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or eVisitor pass. A visa, ETA or eVisitor must be obtained overseas before you arrive in Australia.

If you are arriving at Sydney International Airport by plane and transfering either to a bus or a domestic flight to Canberra, then make sure you leave sufficient time for customs and transfer at Sydney International Airport. Murrays and Greyhound Coach services to Canberra depart outside the international terminal. Domestic flights to Canberra depart from domestic terminals T2 or T3, which are located in separate buildings from the international terminal T1. Information on transfering between the international and domestic terminals is located here.

There are strict quarantine laws which prevent you from bringing some food and other items into Australia. Check the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service web site more information.

Getting around Canberra by bus
ACTION Buses is Canberra's main public transport service. If you intend to use this bus service twice a day for the duration of the workshop, then it is cheaper to purchase a FareSaver10 or Weekly Ticket. For ticketing information, click here.
