An Introduction to Categories II
Greg Stephenson
John Dedman Building, G35
Get there 2:45 for biscuits and coffee!
Abstract
Having given a brief introduction to the language of categories we are now able to describe some of the fundamental constructions. Limits, colimits, and adjoints will be defined and several examples will be given. The relationship between these constructions will also be described.

Fourth Year Honours Students Seminar
Radial Basis Functions and Volume of Fluid Methods
Robert Saye
John Dedman Building, G35
Abstract
In this talk two topics are introduced: the volume of fluid (VOF) method and the theory of radial basis functions. The VOF method is a numerical technique to track the interface between two regions in space, and has applications in modelling two-phase fluid flow. On the other hand, radial basis functions offer a general method to interpolate scattered data in any dimension, and have a rich mathematical theory concerning the approximation and smoothness properties of such interpolants. Some results that combine the two methods, to create a new interface reconstruction algorithm, are also presented.
