Non-parametric density estimation using Sparse Grids
Sarah Bolt
John Dedman Building, G35
Abstract
An increase in data volume and complexity in recent years has lead to an increase in the demand for tools that can detect or summarize the structure of multivariate data. One such tool is a probability density function, which can provide a natural description of the distribution of data. Estimating this function presents a number of difficulties, particularly for higher-dimensional data. We will explore a number of these issues as well as our attempt to overcome them through the application of Sparse Grids, a grid-based approximation technique designed to aid in the dimensionality issues of such problems.
