MSI Colloquium
Dissipation, dilation and decoherence
Keith Hannabuss - Oxford University
John Dedman G35
Abstract
How can macroscopic bodies such as a Brownian pollen grain satisfy irreversible equations when all the constituent molecules satisfy time-reversible equations? This colloquium will survey how the Sz.Nagy dilation of a semi-group of operators on Hilbert space has been exploited to provide an explanation. Related considerations apply to decoherence in quantum systems and may be of use in quantum computers. Basically a survey of how dilations of semi-groups of operators on Hilbert space can be used to study dissipative systems and decoherence in quantum systems, such as quantum computers.
