From FFT to Random Matrix Theory: Computational Number Theory 1970-2006
John Cannon - University of Sydney
G35
Abstract
Although a great deal of computation in number theory was undertaken between the late 1940's and the early 1970's it can be argued that prior to the 1980's, few algorithms were based on deep theoretical ideas. In this talk I will look at the evolution of methods in five areas of CNT over the period 1970 - 2006. In particular, I will highlight the impact of public key cryptography on CNT. Against this background I will outline some of the many contributions of Richard Brent to CNT.
