The MSI was deeply saddened by the passing away of Bernhard Neumann on the morning of Monday 21 October 2002 at the age of ninety-three. His eminent contributions to mathematics will always be remembered and his prominent role in mathematics in Australia never forgotten.

The funeral service was held on Friday 25 October in Canberra (Australia). A Memorial Celebration for the life of Bernhard was held on Friday 13 December 2002 in Rehearsal Room 3 of the Canberra School of Music (Llewellyn Hall), beginning at 10.30am.

The MSI's seminar room, G35 of the John Dedman Mathematical Sciences Building, was renamed the Bernhard Neumann Seminar Room in an official launch by the Dean, Professor Alan Carey, on Monday 30 June 2003.
