MSI Third Year Courses
Third Year Courses (Also Available for Honours)
It is strongly recommended that all third-year students consult the
Department in the selection of their courses. The coordinator of Third
Year courses is Dr L. Stals, room Crisp 2006.
Honours Pathway Stream
All our third year courses are either honours pathway courses (HPC) or have an honours pathway
option (HPO).
Third/Fourth Year Courses (see table)
These are courses which have a third year (or MATH2320: Analysis 1 or MATH2322: Algebra 1)
pre-requisite. These courses, together with the special topics
courses, can be taken by students in their 4th year Mathematics Honours
program.
Special Topic Courses (see table)
The Special topic courses are offered subject to staff
availability and student demand and are run with the support of the Reseach groups within the Mathematical
Sciences Institute. They are generally advanced courses with standard third year courses as pre-requisites.
Information on the special topic courses (and some of the Advanced Courses), their
availability, the choice of special topics and their timetabling is provided at
a meeting held at 10am on the first Monday of
each semester in room John Dedman G35
Recommendation for Fourth Year Honours in Mathemtics
It is recommended that students intending to continue onto a 4th
year Honours Mathematics program should complete at least 24 units of C
level Mathematics courses at honours pathway level, including MATH3116 and MATH3104 (unless MATH2320 and MATH2322 have already been taken).
Any student considering Honours in Mathematics should discuss this
with the Fourth Year course coordinator early in the year. Intending Honours
students should note that some courses may be regarded as essential
prerequisites for Fourth Year studies (depending on the areas chosen
for specialisation). It is therefore essential that all such students
plan their programs in consultation with Departmental advisers.
