2pm- 3.30pm Monday 16 June 2008
Room John Dedman Meetings Room 1177
Agenda/Minutes
1. Welcome/Apologies
New members Judy-anne Osborn and Bishnu Lamichhane were welcomed to the meeting.
2. Minutes of Meeting
Notes
of previous meeting
The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted.
3. Matters arising
No matters arising
4. Maths Day
Maths
Day was held on Friday 30th May. The day went well, with 160 students
from 30 schools attending. We obtained some media interest from ABC 666
and hope to followup with news items for various regional papers.
Thanks to Ben Andrews, Bob Bryce, Malcolm Brooks, David Clarke, Alex
Isaev, Andrew Hassell, Scott Yates for help on the day and with the
setting of the questions. Thanks also to those who helped proof read
the questions.
5. Learning Management system
Linda Stals reported on the progress of finding a replacement for WebCT
6. Undergraduate course changes.
The meeting agreed that the names of the following courses should be changed to better describe the contents of the courses:
MATH1003 Mathematical Modelling 1 to MATH1003 Calculus and Matrix Models
MATH1005 Mathematical Modelling 2 to MATH1005 Discrete Mathematical Models
MATH1007 Poetry of the Universe to MATH1042 Philosophy of the Universe
MATH2320 Analysis 1 Honours to MATH2320 Analysis 1 Honours: Metric Spaces
and Applications
MATH3320 Analysis 2 Honours to MATH3320 Analysis 2 Honours: Topology,
Lebesgue Integration and Hilbert Spaces
MATH3325 Analysis 3 Honours to MATH3325 Analysis 3 Honours: Functional Analysis, Spectral Theory and Applications
MATH2322 Algebra 1 Honours to MATH2322 Algebra 1 Honours:

MATH3104 Applied Algebra 1 Honours: Groups, Rings and Advanced Linear Algebra
7. Postgraduate course name changes
The meeting agreed to the propoal to change the names of some of our
postgradaute courses to make them consistent with their content and
their undergraduate counterparts.
MATH6109 Probability, Mathematical Statistics and Stochastic Processors
to MATH6109 Probability Modelling with Applications
MATH6110 Real Analysis to MATH6110 Analysis 1: Metric Spaces
and Applications
MATH6118 Groups and Rings to MATH6118 Algebra 1: Groups,
Rings and Advanced Linear Algebra
MATH6205 Topics in Differential Geometry to MATH6205 Differential
Geometry
MATH6202 Topics in Partial Differential Equations to MATH6202
Theory of Partial Differential Equations
MATH6201 Topics in Advanced Computation to MATH6201 Topics in
Computational Mathematics
MATH6208 Advanced Bioinformatics to MATH6208 Topics in Bioinformatics Honours
The Master of Mathemtical Science degree rules is built around two
groups of courses, the MATH61** courses and the more advanced MATH62**.
We would like to include 4 current MATH61** courses into the more
advanced group of courses. As such we would like to change the codes
from MATH61** to MATH62**. In addition for naming consistency we are
also proposing name changes as well for 3 of the courses. In particular:
We propose the following name change and course code change:
MATH6107 Modern Analysis to MATH6212 Analysis 2: Topology,
Lebesgue Integration and Hilbert Spaces
MATH6108 Functional Analysis to MATH6214 Analysis 3: Functional
analysis, Spectral Theory and Applications
MATH6106 Abstract Algebra to MATH6215 Algebra 2: Field Extensions and Galois Theory
We propose the following code change
MATH6113 Complex Analysis to MATH6213 Complex Analysis
8. Master of
Mathematical Sciences
(see curent rules
(http://studyat.anu.edu.au/programs/7607XMMASC;study_options.html)
We proposed the following small change to the degree rules to allow students undertake more advanced courses
Degree Structure:
The Master of Mathematical Sciences program requires 72 units, with
(a) at least 30 units from group 1 and 2, of which at least 18 units should
be from group 2 (advanced courses)
(b) 24 units from group 3 including at least 12 units of MATH8701.
Group 1: Courses with a code in the range MATH6100 - MATH6199.
Group 2: Courses with a code in the range MATH6200 - MATH6299.
Group 3: MATH8701 Mathematics Research Project, MATH8702
Mathematics Reading Course.
Each student's program of study and assessment will be individually
tailored to the interests and vocational requirements of the student,
in consultation with the course coordinator.
Students may enrol in related graduate courses offered by other
programs with the permission of the course coordinator and may be
permitted to include the following 2 courses in their program if they
are necessary background:
* MATH2405 (Mathematical Methods 1 Honours)
* MATH2406 (Mathematical Methods 2 Honours)
Some courses will only be offered if there is staff available and sufficient student interest.
9. Honours Pathway Option and Honours Pathway Courses
At
the upcoming Head retreat we will be talking about how to improve the
experience for the direct entry to honours BSc students. At the present
it is the provision of HPC and HPO which enrich their program. Is this
working and indeed are HPO's and HPC's working.
The consensus was that HPO should involve more work, perhaps
something like an add-on. It would then be possible for students to
choose whether to be graded under the standard or honours assessment.
10. Review of
First Year Teaching
Sub-Committees on Calculus and Linear Algebra repored back on
progress. Resolved to review extra material provided by publishers in addition to online material (ie course slides).
11. Teaching Fund
There will be some funds for teaching initiatives. Please come with
some suggestions. Suggestion to use funds to help with the change over
of first year texts. Also to support Drop in centre.
