College of Science Discipline Sub-Committee in Mathematics

Meeting 2008-01 1pm- 2pm Thursday 27 March 2008

Room MORAN1012

Agenda

1. Welcome/Apologies

Please note that all with an interest in teaching and learning in the area of mathematics are welcome.

2. Minutes of Meeting

Notes of previous meeting

3. Matters arising

4. Honours

Our recommendation to 4th year honours students is now:

It is recommended that students intending to continue onto Honours in Mathematics should complete at least 24 units of C level Mathematics courses at honours pathway level, including MATH3116 and MATH3104 (unless MATH2320 and MATH2322 have already been taken).

5. Master of Mathematical Sciences

New Graduate Coursework Convenor, John Urbas

Proposal: To include the following courses into "Group 2" advanced courses in the rules for the degree
(http://studyat.anu.edu.au/programs/7607XMMASC;study_options.html)

MATH6107 Modern Analysis (Analysis 2),
MATH6106 Abstract Algebra (Galois Theory)
MATH6108 Functional Analysis (Analysis 3)
MATH6113 Complex Analysis

These courses have other 6100 level courses as prerequisites, and so should be counted as advanced courses for the program.

6. Marketing

Adam Rennie to provide some feedback on a recent marketing meeting. Ideas to increase the retension of students in maths.

8. Dropin Centre

The drop in centre is running 8 hours per week. Rishni Ratnam is the coordinator for the drop in centre and we are using a range of students from PhD -Honours - 3rd Year to staff the centre.

9. Maths Day

Maths Day will be held on Friday 30th May. A number of people have volunteered to help with the production of  various  problems.  We will decide on how to distribut the work at the meeting.

The poster needs to be finalised and sent off by the 4th April. The other problem sets need to be finalised by the end of April to give us enough time to proof read and print the questions.

Here are some links showing some past questions.

2007 Poster
2007 Group Questions
2007 Swiss
2007 Cross (we already have one for 2008)
2004 Relay (the 2007 relay was too hard, and we don't have the 2005, 2006 questions. Consecutive questions (1 and 2, 3 and 4 etc.) should be simiilar).

10. Review of First Year Teaching

Most important to form sub-committees to review our Calculus and Algeba streams for the Math1003, MATH1013, MATH1014, MATH2305 courses. The core membership of these sub-committees should be at least those people who have lectured in these courses in the last few years.

AMSI has recently produced a report on engineering mathemtics for the Carrick Institute. It has some interesting discussion of techniques being used to engage engineering students.

11. Any other business
